Shou can be friendly and easy to talk to, but hard to get close to as he prefers to distant himself from others. He is careful at making friends and at trusting others, while making a contact he focuses on the reactions of the person whom he is speaking with to determine how or if he would associate with them.
He sincerely cares about helping others achieving their goals and solving their problems, though he believes that he should not get too involved with others as it is not guaranteed that the other would not betray his trust. Despite him being doubtful about others, he can be open-minded and rather calm and mellow by accepting and making the best out of things. That way he can go through his responsibilities smoothly, avoiding troubles.
As easy-going as he usually is, Shou has some rules set up for himself and always does his best to follow them. He believes that those rules are the right way to live by and will get irritated easily at anyone who goes against his agenda.
He is also fast to adapt to things and rather quick-witted to solve and respond quickly to a given issue. This makes him have high confidence in himself and be independent. The moment he sees an opportunity he would try to seize it as soon as possible. He has a strong sense of responsibility so if he ever messed up something, he would try to fix what he had done as much as he can, due to his guilty conscience.
Despite his high self-esteem, he’s vulnerable and easy to mentally get hurt, which would cause him grief and have mental breakdowns. After some time, his sorrow will go away and by then he’d return to his positive self in front of others. But on the inside, he will always remembers what and who hurt him. Shou has a hard time getting over and forgiving others, even himself if he goes against his own policies.
Shou was born to a Japanese mother and a Hong Kongese immigrant father, in a public Kyoto hospital. Shortly after his younger sister birth, his parents divorced. He and his sister lived with his father, a busy businessman, who worked day and night while their mother moved back to her hometown alone. This caused Shou to felt a sense of loss, made a hole inside his heart and filled him with both anxiety and loneliness. He thought that if his mom was able to leave him then maybe his father could also do the same. Not wanting to be a burden, Shou learned to be independent and taught himself how to do chores and study along with helping his younger sibling.
As he grew up, Shou kept feeling more and more distant from friends of his own age as he kept missing out on many activities in class due to being too busy at home. Even if he’s able to have conversations with his classmates and have fun with them from time to time, he still felt that he doesn’t really fit in well with them anymore. No matter how much he tried to keep up, there was always this empty feeling inside of him and it just kept on growing day after day. After a while, he stopped trying to blend in and just kept himself distant. Due to his inability to get along with his class, he became an easy target for bullying for others. Unwilling to accept what was happening, he retorted and got himself into various fights at school which caused him to be viewed as a troublemaker for both the school's teachers and his own father.
In his second year of middle school, he met someone that he got along well with and considered him as his closest friend. This encounter lessen his social isolation and brought out his bright and affectionate self which was thought to have been lost. He later on got introduced to his friend’s girlfriend and the three of them started hanging out with each other often. Things went well for a year but then the girl suddenly came onto Shou and tried to seduce him. Despite his refusal, the girl kept pressing on the issue until someone found out about it. But the girl acted herself to be the victim and got everyone to be on her side and pushed all the blames onto Shou. His friend got mad at Shou and went to confront him, their conflicts ended up in an intensive fight. By the end of it, they both got suspended from school and their friendship ceased to exist. As much as Shou felt devastated from what happened, the thing that really hurt him deeply and put him into misery for a long period was how little trust he got from his friend when he tried to reason with him. Since then he started to become more wary of others and learned not to trust others too much, distancing himself from others even more than before.
Around the time of his graduation, his father remarried to a Japanese business woman. Which shocked him in a displeasing way, but he decided to keep quiet while hoping that this would put fewer burdens on his father. Though, his stubbornness still couldn’t accept the new woman and her child in their life as new family members. After his graduation, he asked his father for permission to study in a different town. The town he had chosen was the hometown of his mother. He had always wanted to see her after they got separated and this seemed like a good opportunity. His father tried to persuade him into staying but seeing Shou's determination, after a long time of debating, he agreed to his son’s request and sent him to Sugiwara where he applied to Seiko High.
Being in a new environment brought him both joy and nervousness, even though the news about his mother being hospitalized gave him he a scare at first but he slowly adapted and became used to his new living place. Living near his mother made him feel at ease as he can understand her better now and easily come to her aid if she ever needs someone to be there.
Despite his carefree attitude, he still has a lot of anxieties and distrust in others. This made him unable to convey his thoughts to anyone he had ever interacted with and lost many relationships in life which caused him to feel more seclusive. His greatest wish is to be able to overcome his trauma one day so that he can open up himself to others, be genuinely happy again and let go of the forced smile he always have on his face.
